Summer gives way to fall as the season’s change is in the air.
Long-standing traditions set our community rhythm as we rally behind kids returning to school and celebrate events that pulse through our Bulldog-orange hearts. Fall is the season for corn mazes, football games, and holidays, all with a common foundation: the opportunity for gathering.
The connection between gathering and a deep sense of community is most clearly realized around the table. There is something divinely beautiful about the radically simple act of sharing food. The overly familiar and often overlooked ritual of eating reminds us of our humanity. While food can be mishandled, from overconsumption to unhealthy avoidance, the practice of gathering restores balance, allowing us to rightly savor what is on the table and cherish the company around us. While food nourishes the body, a shared meal nourishes the soul.
We gather around the table for different purposes. In the Christian faith, the table symbolizes a place where God’s presence is welcomed, honoring Him as the Provider and Sustainer. Here, the table is a place of forgiveness and salvation. Many disciples of Christ view every meal as a chance to remember Jesus and commune with others.
Some occasions call for entertainment: fancy plates and elaborate centerpieces, elegance, allure, and charm—a feast from hors d’oeuvres to desserts. Yet most gatherings unfold in the seemingly ordinary moments of the day, such as a last-minute dinner invite to a neighbor while grabbing a pizza on the way home from work, clearing that never-ending pile of laundry from the table, and setting out paper plates. No performance. No pretense. No expectations. Simply bidding guests to come as they are and share the gift of undivided presence, vulnerable honesty, and genuine love. No more, no less.
While you peruse this fall edition of Focus on Artesia, we hope you will find inspiration from fellow community members who gather regularly with others. You can also discover upcoming events and explore the offerings of local businesses through their advertisements. This magazine continues to thrive thanks to the generosity of these contributors and readers just like you.
Wherever it may be set, the table invites us to play host and guest, to give and receive, to encourage others, and through this, find encouragement ourselves. Around the table, there is no place for pride or judgment, rather we encounter thanksgiving, realizing that at the most basic level, we all need sustaining nourishment from food and connection alike. We come as we are to give, receive, and commune together.
This season, may we enjoy many harvest gatherings of life lived around the table.
