Focus Artesia Fall 2023 | The Service & Sacrifice of First Responders Focus Artesia Fall 2023 | The Service & Sacrifice of First Responders

A first responder is synonymous with a public servant.

The first to arrive in an emergency, this line of work has untold impacts, even for the strongest people. Long hours, potentially dangerous situations, and the strain on mental health are just a few of the sacrifices among a very long list. Despite difficult circumstances, these public servants choose to put on the badge and offer a safer world, not only for their loved ones but for complete strangers as well.

The Artesia Public Safety Complex is home to 10 different divisions, all of which play an integral role in public safety. A governing partnership woven throughout the complex ties each division’s efforts together. While there is far more to keeping a community safe than we will (or can) ever understand, there are also aspects to recognize to gain a deeper appreciation for what these men and women do.

For now, let’s look at just a few highlights of 2 of these divisions: the Artesia Police Department (APD) and the Artesia Fire Department (AFD).

Law Enforcement Training

Operating in 12-hour shifts, the APD rotates days and nights every 3 months. There are standards of training requirements that each police officer must complete annually. From hate crimes to tactical breaching (commonly known as forced entry) to missing persons to advanced medical training, they are equipped for a variety of situations.

Sought-After Safety Standards

In 2018, the APD together with Artesia Public Schools received the National Association of School Resource Officers-Safe School Leadership Award. This eventually led to the APD being contacted by the FBI who inquired about the safety measures being implemented. Over the years, the APD has had more opportunities to share knowledge and safety practices, including an invitation to speak at an upcoming safety workshop in Albuquerque this November.

Community Support

Every spring, the APD benefits from the “Thirst” Responders Drive in memory of Cpl. D. Robert Harvey. Cases of water are donated to ensure that all officers remain hydrated while also remembering a hero. Walmart also donates a pallet of water to first responders every year as well. These bottles represent not only the love for the APD by the community but also the love of a man who gave his life in service.

Jr. Police Academy

Prior to COVID, the APD hosted a weeklong academy for girls and boys, teaching them the basics of police work. Fostering a bond of trust and friendship, the APD invited young people to the police station, offering them a taste of what police work is all about. They hope to offer this again in the future.

Partnership with Border Patrol Agents

Working closely with Border Patrol Agents (BPAs), the APD partners with other agencies to further ensure our safety. In the past, BPAs have helped the Jr. Police Academy to teach children. They also assist with special training like Tactical Medical Training and Mass Casualty Drills. While they serve in an advisory role, they stand ready to respond should the need arise.

Firefighter Training

While it is commonly assumed that a firefighter’s job is primarily to extinguish fires, this actually accounts for less than 10% of the job. The gravity and scope of training includes emergency medical response, nuclear response, swift water rescue, find and rescue operations, and much more. Additionally (and unique to the AFD), they maintain and service their own vehicles. Who knew these firefighters were also mechanics?

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)

As recently as 1965, emergency medical care was available only by volunteers, not trained medical professionals. Thankfully today, all of our firefighters are also trained as EMTs, assuring that even in the most critical situations, the first responders are equipped. They bridge the gap between the arrival on the scene to the arrival at the hospital, giving not only medical care but hope as well.

Preventative Services

Prevention is the best policy when it comes to safety. The AFD offers inspections of businesses and homes. They are also available to assist with problems before they become emergencies. If you feel a situation could quickly become an emergency, for example, if you are having difficulty moving from the bed to standing, or even if you feel confused about medications, the AFD stands ready to help.

Partnership with Schools

The AFD provides education in schools. A favorite among Grand Heights students, these kindergarteners not only welcome the firefighters to their school for a visit but also take a field trip to the Safety Complex each year. The AFD also helps coordinate school fire drills, helping students learn safety skills they can use even at home.

Workplace Doubles as Home

Many of us understand what it is like to work from home but only some have experienced creating a home at work. With 48 hours on and 96 hours off, the AFD work schedule does not fall under a traditional day and night shift. They must be ready for action, even while sleeping. Complete with dorm rooms, a kitchen, and even a movie theater, the Safety Complex is their home away from home.
