Making a Difference Making a Difference

We had a guest preacher Sunday. It was a guy I have known almost his whole life. He graduated with my son. He played football with him also. I have watched him grow and become a great man of God. But, when I look at him, I still see that young kid I knew when he was in high school. He talked about the people who have led him and been an influence in his life. There were many. I was proud to be mentioned as one of those. But it got me to thinking, as I looked around the church that day, who were some of the influences in my own life.

Of course, I was blessed with great parents that taught me so much, both by word and example. There were those dear sweet women at our church at Woodrow who loved me and led me. Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Cearly, and so many others. Then there were those wonderful people at Union. Too many to name. That list could go on and on as these people led me during my growing up years.

There were those teachers in school. Mrs. Carpenter comes quickly to mind. Coaches like Coach Havens, Mr. Wheeler, Cecil Thomas. Others that have just been around me in neither a teacher or coach role. Again, that list could just keep going.

I know, as you are reading this, you will know very few, if any of these names. But if you know me, you know their influence. Influence is a funny thing. You don’t even have to know who any of these people are to be influenced by them. I try hard for my life to be an example of the impact these people had on me. I try hard for that life to impact others down the road.

I am fortunate that I continue to get to spend a lot of time with the high school kiddos on the sidelines. I get to take pictures as they play their sports. I so love that time with them. The school superintendent pointed out to me one time that my camera was just what got me there, but my real job was to be an encourager and a listener to those kids. I loved that! I love that they still come up and hug this old lady and tell me they love me. I try hard to not let any time with any of this kids pass without me telling them I love them. And I truly mean it. I do love them!

I guess the point of all this rambling on is that we each have the opportunity each day to be an influence on someone else, and that influence takes on a life of its own as it is passed along from one generation to the next. Who are you influencing? Who are you teaching? Who are you showing how to navigate this world?

Be serious in your walk with God. Be mindful of who might be watching. Be intentional in your influence of others. You could be the only good they see. Be a good influence on the world! It will make a difference.
