Grapes & Wine
NM is America’s oldest wine country. Wine grapes were first planted in NM in 1629; today, more than 40 wineries have been established in the state.

The nine-day Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta held each October is the largest balloon convention in the world.
Green & Red Chile
NM is the only state with an official question: “Red or green?” It refers to chile preference, of course!

Turquoise
The State Gem is turquoise- it is a phosphate of aluminum carrying small quantities of copper and iron and a green mineral, variscite. These give the gemstone its color as well as its value and beauty.
Zia
The Zia is an ancient sun symbol that represents the four directions (north, south, east, west), four seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter), the day (sunrise, noon, evening, night), and life itself (childhood, youth, middle years, old age).
