I am going to do something a little different. I am going to share a Christmas poem I wrote a few years ago to use as a Children’s sermon. I hope you enjoy it.
The Little Shepherd Boy
The night was so dark,
As the sheep were grazing.
The little shepherd boy
Just lay there gazing.
The evening was quiet.
Just the normal night sounds.
As the little shepherd boy
Lay on the hard ground.
The sky was black.
Just a few stars were twinkling.
The boy stared at the sky.
His little heart was thinking.
“Something is missing.”
He said to no one.
“Something’s not right,
I feel things are undone.”
He rose from the ground.
He counted the sheep.
But this counting was work.
Not to help fall asleep.
While he wandered around,
His thoughts so confusing.
“I’m just a shepherd boy.
Too small for God’s using.”
“I want to be useful.
I want to serve God.
But a little shepherd boy
Is just not allowed.”
He sighed so deeply,
And looked at the sky.
What did he see
Shining up so high?
“What is that sound?
What do I hear?”
Up in the sky
Angels appeared!
Their songs were so pretty.
Their melody strong.
“The King is here!
Tonight He is born!
We’ll watch your sheep.
Run fast to the barn.
The baby is sleeping
In His mother’s arms!”
The shepherd boy ran.
He would not be the same,
As he knelt at the manger,
Where the baby was laid.
When he went back to work,
He was no longer bored.
The shepherd boy knew
He had just seen the Lord!
Size didn’t matter.
He knew it was right.
Cause God sent His Son
As a baby that night.
He sent His angels
To tell the boy so small.
“Joy to the world!
Jesus came for us all!”
Jesus. The gift that makes the difference!
