Sunday night’s rainstorm was a wonderful relief for many of us, with the airport reporting 1.3 inches of rain. Up to the north, near Roswell, as many as four inches of rain was reported. Unfortunately, we do believe a microburst occurred near the city’s municipal golf course in Carlsbad, and several trees were damaged or knocked over on the course.
The golf course remained open on Monday, with the exception of the 17th hole. Public works crews are working hard to clear away the debris and are doing an excellent job. Of course, our immediate goal is to clear away everything that was knocked over. Down the road, we will look at replacing the trees at the golf course. Our public works crews do a great job responding quickly to issues such as this.
We received some great feedback as well about some city workers who recently went beyond the call of duty. Apparently, two dogs were struggling in the water near the train bridge earlier in the month. Some of our workers, who were keeping the beach area free of trash, went into the river to help the dogs get out of the water. A local resident thanked these workers for helping these dogs, and for doing such a good job with cleanup along the beach.
Congratulations to the Assistance League of Carlsbad on a very successful Ducky Affair Saturday night. Attendance at the water park was great, and the event raised money for Operation School Bell. Special thanks to Danny Fletcher, AKA J.D. Strait, who stepped in to provide the entertainment for the evening. It was another exciting weekend in Carlsbad. Danny is also serving as our master of ceremonies during our upcoming Independence Day celebration.
We are putting together the details for our Fourth of July celebration this weekend. We’re especially excited about our ceremony at the courthouse lawn at 10 a.m. July 4 to honor our World War II and Korean War era veterans. County Commissioner Sarah Cordova will be joining us in honoring these heroes, along with the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard, Rhonda Hatch and Pastor Destry McDonald. We only have a small number of World War 2 and Korean War veterans left with us, so this will be a very special ceremony that begins as the Independence Day parade concludes. We plan to focus on Vietnam War era veterans during the 2023 ceremony, and we also had an outstanding ceremony to honor our Vietnam Veterans over Veterans Day. We hope you’ll join us on the courthouse lawn as we honor these wonderful citizens.
