I was talking to a friend earlier today about an email I had sent him. The conversation went something like this: “I got your email, but I couldn’t open the attachment, because it was sent in Pages.” I replied, “How about I resend the email and just copy and paste it into the body of the email?” Just a normal conversation. But it struck me how many words and phrases we had just used that are common vernacular today, and would have been a foreign language as recently as maybe 20 years ago.
We have a whole new way of communicating these days. We text. We message. We Facebook live. We Facetime. We email. We chat. And there are so many other ways of communicating! Life has certainly changed.
As I was thinking about this, I thought about how our communication with God has never changed. The one best way to reach Him is through prayer. We don’t have to look for a “read” message, or text Him later to see if He got our message, or look for a receipt email to show that He did get our message. All we have to do is pray. And He hears. Always. No mystery to it. We pray. He hears.
And hearing from Him has not changed either. We still hear from Him in His Word, or in the voices of other Christians, or just that simple “still small voice” that just whispers His words to us. Maybe in the breeze, or in the stillness. Maybe in the wind or the voice of your child. He speaks to us so readily, but we have to take time to listen to truly hear Him.
Just like this morning. I was incredibly busy, as we all are. I am trying to get a project completed, while still doing all the daily things that my work entails, as well as attending so many “photo op” events. But, somehow, in the rush of the exchanged messages, emails, and phone calls, I still heard His voice saying, “There is your column. Don’t miss it.”
Certainly, we love the technology of the day, for the most part. We are able to keep up with old friends from the past, and see what they are up to. We are able to communicate quickly what once would have taken several days of back and forth letters. But, sometimes this technology keeps us so busy, we forget to listen to what God is trying to say to us.
Shut off your phone and your computer for a minute and pick up God’s Word. A Bible that you can actually hold in your hand and touch the pages. Spend time reading carefully and underlining as God speaks to you. It will change you. I promise you, time spent in God’s Word will change your life completely.
Be grateful for the new ways of communicating and all the wonderful amazing things technology has brought us. But be grateful that communicating with God, the Father, has never changed.
Spend some time with Him today. It will make a difference!
