How satisfied are you with your life? I was reading a scripture this morning from Philippians, in which Paul writes, “I have learned to be satisfied with the things I have. I know how to live when I am poor and I know how to live when I have plenty.” How many of us could say this? I am afraid I couldn’t. We always think we need just a little more. I have always heard that the more you have, the more you think you need.
Sometimes, it seems like it would be so great to go back to a more simple life. That life where if you couldn’t afford it, you just didn’t get it. That life where it didn’t really seem to matter what anyone else had, we were just pretty content with what we had. Our society just seems to pound us with what we don’t have and what we really need. The media bombards us with all these commercials about items that will make our lives complete. Honestly, does stuff ever really complete our lives?
As God’s creations, we are created with a Jesus sized hole in our hearts. We all are. It doesn’t matter if you believe in God or not, it is still the truth. He created us with a need for Him in our lives. We will never be complete until we accept Jesus into our hearts. We can buy all the stuff the world has to offer. We can have the latest in electronic devices. We can go on amazing trips. We can go through relationship after relationship, but nothing will ever satisfy. There will always be that yearning for something else, until we find Jesus.
I remember years ago, talking with a young man who had just returned from a prison stay. I wanted him to talk with a kiddo with whom I was working that really seemed to be headed down the wrong path at warp speed. This young man told me he would be happy to talk to the young boy with whom I was working. He said, “Mrs. Kelly, I will be happy to talk to him but if I can’t talk about what changed my life, then I would be wasting my time.” I asked what he meant. “Until I found Jesus, I was heading down the same path this kid is. I had spent my life searching for something but I didn’t know what. Finding Jesus changed my life. If I can’t offer him Jesus, then I don’t need to talk to him.” I told him to go talk to that kiddo and say whatever he felt he needed to say. He made me so proud and still makes me proud today. Jesus did change that young man’s life.
Our lives are hopelessly incomplete without Jesus. He says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Do you want to be complete? Do you want to be satisfied regardless of your circumstances? Then fill that hole in your heart with the only One who will fit. Fill your heart with Jesus. Stuff has no comparison to the Master Creator in making you feel complete.
Learn to be satisfied. Be satisfied with Jesus. It will make a difference.
