One of the most reputable charities in the world is called the World Central Kitchen. Run by chef José Andrés, the kitchen has an incredible record of supporting the hungry. In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic, World Central Kitchen supported local businesses by providing gift cards for Carlsbad restaurants.

World Central Kitchen has also played a major role in providing relief to Ukraine.  Carlsbad’s Balzano family is participating in “A Day to Feed Ukraine” on Saturday. That day, all proceeds from food sales at the Trinity Hotel and Balzano Vineyards will go to World Central Kitchen and be matched by Trip Advisor.

There’s also going to a bike run Saturday – April 30 – in support of the Carlsbad Battered Families Shelter and domestic violence. The run will begin at 11 a.m. at the civic center, ride to White’s City and finish at Cal’s Shade Western, where a silent auction will take place.

Earlier this week, Albertsons had a special event to honor Women’s History Month. Local business owners and community leaders all received special visits from members of Albertsons “A-Team.” 

Local outstanding women honored were: Mary Molinar, Valerie Murrill, Dr. Amanda Ryan, Jody Knox, Katie Gomez, Kerri Fowler, Alana Carreon, Janice Rodriguez, Zynthia Rodriguez, Crystal Mullens, Stacey Cooper, Susan Moor and Rep. Cathrynn Brown. Congratulations to everyone!

We have received notice that Current-Argus reporter Claudia Silva, who was working here through a fellowship with the New Mexico Local News Fund, will no longer be working in Carlsbad. The good news is that Claudia has apparently gotten another great job, and we’re very excited for her. Claudia did an outstanding job covering education and other topics in our community. We wish she could stay here, but we also wish her the best at her new place of employment.
