Headers2020-Letter-from-Editor

The spring winds have blown us right into the summer months.

We have finally pushed pause on a school schedule and pressed play on warm and adventurous things. More spontaneity, less structure. Barbeques, celebrations, picnics, swimming, outdoor dining, and outdoor play. Summer invites us to change the pace, if only for a season.

With this first issue as Associate Publisher for Focus on Artesia, there was no better way to orient myself to the task than by walking the streets of the town. A West Texas native, I still have much to learn about our community and the people who have made this place home. After living in the mountains of Colorado, near the beaches of Florida, and on the plains of Texas, my husband Stuart and I moved to Artesia in 2015 and have been putting down roots ever since.

My role as a wife and my calling as a mom to three girls are the greatest blessings! I am also a Registered Dietitian and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who transformed into a farm girl when my husband and I started Heirloom Acres Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch. We are raising our girls to love God and others and to pick a few pumpkins along the way. I have grown to love agriculture and small-town living, two very unexpected adventures that have brought with them some of the greatest joys.

In this summer edition, we canvassed the community to find ways to explore, relax, and maybe even vacation locally. New experiences can be found without booking expensive vacations. Paradise is not confined to an ocean view. Some of the richest experiences come from a change of pace and a shift in perspective, both of which can happen right at home. All that is required is a spirit of curiosity and some creativity.

As you peruse these pages, discover that many of the highlighted stories and events invite us to connect: with ourselves, as it may be time for a change in rhythm from the fast-paced norm; with others, because connection happens in community; with the great outdoors, because sunshine and fresh air are restorative to the body, mind, and soul; and with our town, because there is so much waiting right outside. Something as simple as choosing to walk more can alter a vantage point, opening our eyes to the details we would most often cruise past. Our small town has BIG possibilities! You just have to take the first step.

I am so thankful for your time as we dive into this first issue together. Be sure to take note of the organizations, contributors, and businesses that advertise on our pages. This publication would not have been possible without their generous support.

This summer, when you look for refreshments close to home, this issue will help you find whatever you seek. Enjoy your time reading for our favorite ideas of the many ways to explore and relax in the paradise that is Southeast New Mexico.

Adventure awaits!
