The week of Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 is known as Constitution Week. This important celebration was initiated by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a way of encouraging education and historic preservation.
Constitution Week was first adopted in 1955 as a project proposed by Daughters President General Gertrude S. Caraway to promote the observance of the U.S. Constitution. It was officially declared by President Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956 as “Constitution Day” and “Citizenship Day.”
September 17 marked the 235th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America. The Constitution of the United States protects our liberties, outlines the principles of limited government, and forms the process for rule by law.
The U.S. Constitution has 4,400 words. It is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world. Since 1952, the document has been on display in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC
It is a document more important now than ever before, and we are honored to recognize Constitution Week in Carlsbad and across the country.
