The community has a lot to be proud of in terms of coming together for the effort for independence for Carlsbad’s community college. On Monday, the Senate education committee voted, 7-1, for a “Do Pass” recommendation for Senator Gay Kernan’s Bill, SB 236. The senate bill will now go to the Senate Finance Committee.
Last week, Rep. Brown’s HB 212, which is a mirror bill, made it through its first committee and will now go to the House Education Committee. We had a large number of Carlsbad residents who spoke in favor of the bill on Monday, including current and former students, current and former faculty and staff and other members of the community. It was also wonderful to hear legislators from the northwestern part of New Mexico talk about how many additional opportunities college independence created for their community when San Juan College went in a similar direction. Thanks again to Sen. Kernan and Rep. Brown for their hard work on this bill, as well as to our committee chair Craig Stephens, vice-chair John Heaton and all of the members of the community who have been so supportive and worked so hard.
