At the height of the lock down phase earlier this year, Cody Morton woke up tired of cooking and frustrated in her search of new hours of operation and pickup options for her favorite restaurants in Artesia. She wished that a complete list existed of new hours, of phone numbers, and if curbside was available. Cody has a background in marketing and communications and believes that we all have abilities that we are not using on a daily basis and that the world is full of opportunities for solutions. “If you know you’re good at something,” she says, “make a way to use those skills to help yourself and others.” So she did. Cody created a detailed spreadsheet of all of the local eateries in town which continued to serve with links to their menus, their phone numbers, and how the new curbside pick up options worked. Then, in search of a way to best distrube this list throughout the community, she created the Facebook group Artesia Take Out Delivery. Now 1,300 members strong, the group evolved slightly beyond just documenting take out services. The group keeps tabs on who has patio seating available and who has indoor dining. Invaluable information during the era of ever changing orders coming from the state capital.
High points for the group this past year have been the Cinnamon Roll Wars (#cinnamonrolloff2020) between Henry’s BBQ and Kith + Kin Roasting Co. During the spring event, customers purchased cinnamon rolls from both establishments and left reviews of the rolls. Due to the overwhelming demand for the gooey goodness from both Henry’s and Kith+Kin, Cody declared the contest a tie. This event created such a stir that the story was picked up out of Albuquerque by KRQE 13.
Another rewarding experience for Cody happens when local specials post to the group and then, twenty minutes or so later, the business will report that they have sold out of that particular special. ATOD lives up to its intention; the group curates information about all things local restaurants.
What can we look out for next on Artesia Take Out and Delivery? More posts from the community! Cody encourages more community participation in the Artesia Take Out and Delivery group with posts detailing what you ordered, what dishes you love at a particular restaurant, pictures of yourself dining out or picking up takeout.
Keep up with the Facebook group here!
