Haven of Hope, on Richey Ave. in Artesia, is entering into their 9th month with residents living in the facility. Haven of Hope provides single mothers a communal home for themselves and their children while providing services and education to create financial independence.
Currently the residential cottage is occupied by three single mothers and seven children from 2- to 8-years-old. There are openings for two more families. One of the single moms is working fulltime, one is currently working on her GED and getting her first job, and the third is a full-time student at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and working part time.
“Our families are working hard at advancing their lives, while experiencing exciting new things like learning to ride bikes, starting school, riding the bus, etc.,” said Anita Braun, Executive Director at Haven of Hope. “They celebrate birthdays with signs and cakes, and all the normal things a family does, while learning life skills, financial skills, job skills, attending college, etc.”
Braun said there is a common misconception that Haven of Hope is somehow connected with Grammy’s House in Artesia. “We are not a shelter for domestic violence, a homeless shelter, or a drug and alcohol rehab center. What we do is provide a safe, stable home for single mothers motivated to become stable financially, independent, and filled with hope for the future.”
Single mothers typically stay from 18 to 24 months and are provided onsite services from Permian Basin Counseling and Guidance as needed, life skills mentoring, financial management counseling, resume building, and much more, all at no cost to the residents.
Haven of Hope will be starting a fundraising campaign soon. They also currently have a job opening for an administrative assistant. Please contact Anita if you’re interested in learning more. 575-231-7334.
