The last frost date of Plant Hardiness Zone 7a approaches!
That is us! Zone 7a is Southeast New Mexico. April 15th is the date of the last frost for 2022, so planning those growing beds begins now. In addition to transplanting seedlings, leave room to directly sow some seeds into your plot or pots. If you are an experienced desert gardener or are brand new to the endeavor, consider casting a few of these types of seeds into your garden this spring.
Snap Peas
Quick to germinate, grow, and produce, snap peas make the ideal crunchy garden snack.
Pumpkins
Plant a few seeds together in a hill and watch the vines cover the ground in a few short months.
Lettuce Mixes or Radishes
Expect to see sprouts in less than a week! Harvested in a mere few weeks, lettuce mixes and radishes are a tasty kick off to the summer heat.
Basil
Basil loves the well-drained soil of the region and does well being directly sown into the ground. Basil will grow to three feet tall over the course of a summer.
Zinnias
Tall cutting flowers bursting with color under the blazing summer heat, these beauties are perfect for a summer lunch table.
Pecos Cantaloupes/Watermelons
The Pecos varieties of cantaloupes and watermelons are perfectly adapted to this unique part of the Chihuahuan Desert.
