Here we have it again! A wonderful blank canvas of a New Year with which to apply our creative brush.
My childhood girlfriend asked me over lunch, “What New Year resolutions have you made?” I smugly informed her that I do not make resolutions; I only set intentions. After we parted, I had time to reconsider my statement. I had been one of the many who year after year would boldly set resolutions only to hang my head in shame by January 15th after having bragged, “This would be the year…” only to disappoint myself once again. This is why I now was firmly committed to intention setting only. It seemed, somehow, safer.
What is the real difference between setting a resolution and setting an intention? If we were to ask a mover and shaker, what would they say? Personally, my intention this year will be my year of living VIBRANTLY. When I Googled the definition of vibrantly, I was surprised to find an amazing list of descriptors.
Vibrant:
Vigorous, energetic, radiant, sparkling, vivacious, resonant, bright, rhythmic, throbbing with life, activity, energy, and color!
I had better get busy!
Back to our movers and shakers, what I do know about movers and shakers is that they have several things in common. The first commonality is that they are keenly attuned to opportunities and are willing to act on those opportunities. Hesitation is not something they do. In fact, the very thrill of the moment is sometimes the very reward that drives them. This is not to say they are foolhardy. No! In fact, their instincts are finely tuned to avoid mishaps.
Another trait they share is optimism. Their cups are always half full, never half empty. If this opportunity does not work, it is simply another way to figure out how to make the next one work. Failure is not really in their vocabulary.
Probably the most endearing quality of movers and shakers is their generosity of spirit. It seems to be a common thread that bonds these types regardless of their age. Their willingness to share their abundance with others is chronicled the world over. Consider the story of Jim Morgan, a successful stockbroker who reached a fork in the road and thought he wanted to quit. He instead turned to scripture, Jeremiah 6:16, for direction: “The good way lies in sharing your good fortune with others.” Instead of abandoning his successful career, he discovered a deeper meaning by continuing to invest and sharing his good fortune with others in a myriad of ways. He added a benevolent twist to what he already loved to do.
It seems that movers and shakers have also figured out the key to living a vibrant life. As Albert Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize recipient for his philosophy of “Reverence for Life,” is quoted as saying:
I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know, the ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.
