Imagine: You are Top Gun’s Maverick, flying high above the clouds in a fighter jet with “Danger Zone” playing in the cockpit as you yell, “Talk to me, Goose!”
A pretty good day for anyone, but how did “Maverick” get there, literally?
Meet the man behind all those who fill Maverick’s role: With an easy smile and firm handshake, Bill Niemeier could easily sport a bomber jacket and aviators, but the Navy launched Niemeier in a much different direction, one that placed him firmly into categories that not only serve his country but his family and community. At the age of 18, Niemeier enlisted and was assigned to the USS Forestal (CV-59). Fresh out of bootcamp, he went to sea without a port of call for 108 days. The Naval obligation and arduous trip were more than an introduction to the foreign world of the military; it was the start of his journey home and the man he would become on the way.
As a Machinist Mate, he worked in the Main Machinery Room at the bottom of the ship with two 600psi boilers and a steam turbine engine and generator. The boilers provided steam to the catapults that launched aircraft like Maverick’s off the flight deck. The work by Machinist Mates was necessary for real-life pilots to patrol American airspace and engage in any necessary combat missions. While aboard the Forrestal, he was promoted to Machinist Mate of the Watch, earned a Surface Warfare Specialist designation, and received the Navy Achievement Medal for his work on the Engineering Casualty Control Training Team during an OPPE Examination. In 1993, Niemeier left the Forrestal for a shore duty assignment in SIMA Mayport, FL, where he completed his formal military service.
But Niemeier was far from done firing up the boilers in his life. After being Honorably Discharged in 1996, he launched a new career and personal life from the flight deck of his Navy roots. In Wichita, KS, he secured employment as a life insurance agent and eventually parlayed the position into financial and estate planning. With three small children aboard ship, Niemeier relocated to Carlsbad, NM in 2003 where he again dropped anchor. In the private sector, Bill continued to not only excel but also expand his financial acumen. At Legacy Financial Group, he establishes and maintains 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, and 457 plans for local business entities. While such an accomplishment is impressive in its own right, Niemeier fittingly moved his personal life full steam ahead. He coached youth softball and baseball, junior varsity and varsity soccer, and middle school and varsity volleyball. His children are all Cavemen alumni, college graduates, married, and have successful careers. Such accolades and successes might be enough for a regular man, but not a Navy man like Niemeier. On October 4, 2013, he went on his first date with Karla Hamel. They married on January 20, 2020, and in his own words, they still feel like newlyweds.
So, while he started off as the “man behind Maverick”, Bill Niemeier is now in the cockpit and flying high in life.

He holds a PhD in English Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington with emphases in 19th and 20th century American Literature, Rhetoric and Writing, and Literary Theory and a specialization in Native American Literature(s). He completed his BA and MA in English Studies at Eastern New Mexico University. Courses taught include Professional and Technical Writing, Rhetoric and Writing, Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences with emphasis on American Culture and Society, and Narrative Theory and Discourse. As Dean, he manages, evaluates, and implements assessment practices and processes, fosters a culture of reflection, and advocates and provides professional development opportunities for faculty.
