Focus-2025-Editor-Letter

Before marrying into the Joy family, agriculture had always been a foreign concept to me.

Beyond the open farmland and fields of cotton that we passed along the highway, I never thought that crops had much day-to-day impact on my life. That thinking is naive (and slightly embarrassing to admit) because no matter our profession, location, or life stage, if we eat, we are impacted by this industry.

Not only did I lack appreciation for this field, but I also misunderstood the appeal. An entire livelihood that is dependent on uncontrollable factors like the weather seemed tiresome at best and impossible at worst. But when my engineering husband moved us back to his farming roots, I began to experience why many are drawn to this way of life. We ventured into a corn maze and pumpkin patch, and my perspective changed. Where I once saw risk, I now saw reward. Faith replaced fear. Dirt became soil. And a seed becoming fruit was nothing short of the hand of God. I caught my husband’s vision, seeing beyond certainty and into possibilities.

This is what keeps production going year after year. It is more than an 8–5 job; it is a way of life, a mission, and, for many, a family business. According to the 2022 Census of Agriculture Farm Typology Report, family-owned farms account for 95% of farms in the United States. This calling is rooted deep in a love for the land and heritage alike. The family is challenged to honor the past while innovating for the future. This is most beautifully accomplished by allowing the seeds of past failures and successes to sprout new dreams.

Some operations in Southeast New Mexico began independently and grew into empires, employing many people in our community. Still, others who were native city-dwellers explored a curiosity that inspired a new generation’s love for fields and flocks. The stories in this winter edition of Focus Community Magazine cover many aspects of how locals became producers and supporters, and what that means for all of us.

This issue holds special significance because it arrives in the heart of the holiday season, a time for gathering with family and community. It feels fitting to include stories and writers, businesses and contributors from both Artesia and Carlsbad in this shared space that honors the impact of our individual and collective communities.

Thank you for taking the time to pick up a copy of Focus Community Magazine. We always hope you learn something new from your neighbors and find encouragement for your own journey. May God bless you and yours this holiday season and into the new year!
