The timeless saying, “Legends are not born, they are made,” rings true in the stories captured in this fall issue.
Two thousand twenty-five marks 100 years and beyond for several businesses and buildings in our community. Each was built day by day, year after year, by men and women who were born for greatness, not because of status or silver spoons, but because they embodied timeless qualities such as hard work and respect, even in the face of hardships and humble beginnings. They simply saw needs over the years and found a way to meet them.
I am always intrigued by how businesses succeed for so many years, especially family businesses. They bring a unique dynamic that adds both richness and complexity. Approximately 30% of family businesses successfully transition to the second generation. Only 12% survive to the third generation, and a meager 3% survive into the fourth generation and beyond, according to the Family Business Institute. Yet, businesses like CENTURY 21 Dunagan Associates have not only survived but thrived, defying the odds.
For any organization, family, or community to flourish across generations, open communication and a shared willingness from all involved are essential. The next generation must pursue progress with a spirit of humility. At the same time, the older generation must remain open to change and fresh ideas, for without innovation, we cannot withstand the ever-changing shifts of life.
A heartfelt thank you to the community for making this publication possible. From businesses that advertise to writers, photographers, readers, and those who are willing to share their stories, thank you. Carlsbad is never lacking in people who contribute to the betterment of our community.
Many legends have gone before us, and we reap the benefits of their endeavors. They did not set out with hopes of building an empire and never dreamed their efforts would develop into a century-old establishment. They simply put in an honest day’s work and met needs as they arose. They built families and relationships, and today, our town still enjoys the fruits of their labor.
To the legends of industry of yesterday, and those in the making for tomorrow, we are thankful for you and, in turn, strive to live lives worth building upon for decades to come.
