Summer always brings with it a renewed sense of energy, opportunity, and togetherness in downtown Carlsbad.

At Carlsbad MainStreet, we embrace this seasonal shift as a time to reflect on our mission: to strengthen our downtown district as the heart of the community. Through focused efforts in organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality, everything we do is guided by one central purpose—building community. As a nonprofit, the ways we foster community are diverse and dynamic. Sometimes it is through hosting inclusive, family-friendly events. Other times, it is about beautifying our public spaces, supporting local entrepreneurs, or growing the relationships that strengthen our organizational network. Every project, every event, every initiative contributes to our collective growth—not just as an organization, but as a community.

We often say that MainStreet is the heartbeat of our community, but to me, it’s not just the place—it’s the people who bring it to life. Whether it is the merchant who has been downtown for decades, the local family selling handmade goods on the lawn, or a traveler discovering Carlsbad for the first time, each person adds a unique rhythm to the pulse of our downtown. A thriving downtown does not happen by chance. It takes vision, hard work, and countless hours behind the scenes. I am proud to say that our staff, board, and committee members bring that dedication every day. Their commitment is a reflection of just how deeply our community believes in its own potential.

This summer, we are seeing that belief come to life in beautiful and vibrant ways. We have added two new murals to our growing collection for the arts and cultural district. One, titled “Desert Blooms,” is a vibrant design of a prickly pear cactus on a prominent wall downtown. The other, a playful and colorful highland cow mural by local artist Mike Campos, brings art and charm to a utility box.

Our Downtown Farmers and Makers Market continues to be a space where community pride thrives. It’s more than just a market—it’s a launchpad for entrepreneurs, a gathering place for neighbors, and a weekly celebration of everything that makes Carlsbad special. We invite you to join us on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon through the end of August—come shop, support, and be part of the energy.

At Carlsbad MainStreet, we believe that downtown is more than a location—it is a living, breathing community space shaped by everyone who invests their time, creativity, and heart into it. Together, we are not just watching downtown grow—we are building it, season by season.

I am the Executive Director for Carlsbad MainStreet/Arts & Cultural District. My career began in 2020 as the Director for Carlsbad’s Pearl of the Pecos ACD and at the beginning of 2022 the MainStreet board merged these positions into one. I was born and raised in Ireland and have a diverse background that drives my passion to make my community a better place through many different service organizations, volunteering, and our work through Carlsbad MainStreet.
