A Spotlight Reignited: The Cavern Theatre’s Grand Revival in Downtown Carlsbad

For more than 70 years, the Cavern Theatre has stood as a cultural cornerstone in downtown Carlsbad, New Mexico.

First opening its doors in 1951, the Art Deco-inspired theatre quickly became a treasured gathering place for locals eager to escape into the magic of film. With its striking façade, neon marquee, and plush interior, the Cavern was more than a movie palace—it was a portal to entertainment, community, and connection.

Now, after years of careful planning and passionate rehabilitation, this beloved venue is preparing to welcome a new generation through its doors. Thanks to the efforts of the City of Carlsbad, Carlsbad MainStreet, the Pearl of the Pecos Arts and Cultural District, grantors, and local advocates, the Cavern Theatre is making a triumphant return—rehabilitated not just in architecture, but in spirit.

A Legacy Begins

The Cavern Theatre was originally developed during a post-war period of optimism and cultural growth in Carlsbad. With its modern design and seating for over 900 patrons, the theatre was the crown jewel of downtown and played host to first-run films.

Ownership of the building eventually came into the hands of the Light family, long-time Carlsbad residents and stewards of several key local properties. The Light family never let go of the Cavern’s legacy—or its potential. In 2015, they gifted the building to the City of Carlsbad. The City accepted with one stipulation: that no general fund tax dollars be used for its rehabilitation. This condition sparked what would become a nearly decade-long journey of fundraising, planning, and phased rehabilitation.

A Community Rallies

Following the Light family’s donation, the City of Carlsbad established the Cavern Theatre Task Force to help guide the renovation process. Carlsbad MainStreet, already deeply involved in downtown revitalization efforts, was a major supporter of this project. Together with the Cavern Theatre task force appointed by Mayor Janway, they broke the project into phases using primarily non-promotional Lodgers’ Tax Funds, and then finally grants obtained by both the City and Carlsbad MainStreet.

“Carlsbad MainStreet has been involved in the efforts of the rehabilitation of the Cavern Theatre for the past 10 years,” said Kat Davis, executive director of Carlsbad MainStreet. “We’re finally seeing the finish line ahead as Phase 5 is nearing a close.”

A significant breakthrough came in 2022, when Carlsbad MainStreet secured $350,000 in Capital Outlay funding through New Mexico MainStreet. Around the same time, the City of Carlsbad received a 3.3 million dollar grant from the New Mexico Department of Finance, New Mexico Regional Recreation Centers/Quality of Life Grant, allowing Phase 5—the final phase—to be fully funded.

Restoring More Than a Building

The theatre’s revival is more than just a rehabilitation—it is a reinvestment in Carlsbad’s downtown and cultural identity. In 2024, the Pearl of the Pecos Arts & Cultural District, a program of Carlsbad MainStreet, earned its official state designation. The Cavern Theatre was identified early on as a benchmark project for the district’s vision.

“The Cavern Theatre Rehabilitation was one of our ACD’s benchmark projects that we knew, once complete, would be a tremendous asset to support the growth of our community’s creative economy,” Davis said.

To that end, Carlsbad MainStreet has signed a contract with the City of Carlsbad to manage and operate the theatre. The organization plans to make the space accessible for a wide variety of events, including live performances, film screenings, concerts, educational programming, and community celebrations.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our organization,” Davis noted. “It allows us to build our capacity and further our mission to make Downtown Carlsbad a thriving entertainment district.”

The Next Act

As the final touches are completed and the theatre prepares to open its doors once more, excitement is growing across the community. The Cavern Theatre’s return signals more than the restoration of a beautiful building—it marks the revival of downtown as a place of gathering, expression, and shared experiences.

“The picturesque theatre has been a pillar of our downtown makeup since the 1950s,” said Davis. “We are excited to see the rehabilitation coming to an end and bringing that thriving nightlife back. The options for the theatre, once open and operational, will be limitless—we’re excited to be a part of this long-awaited time for our community.”

From its elegant Art Deco roots to its bold reimagining for the future, the Cavern Theatre remains a symbol of Carlsbad’s resilience, creativity, and love for the arts. The spotlight is on once again—and this time, it’s shining brighter than ever.
