These unparalleled times of the last few months have impacted us all, not least of all our small businesses and restaurants.
After graduating from Optometry School at the University of Houston in 2005, Dr. Kendra Powell joined the practice. They worked as partners for many years until Dr. Powell completed her purchase of the practice in 2012. Dr. and Dr. Hamm retired a couple of years later and moved to North Carolina to be closer to their daughter and grandkids at which time Dr. Powell undertook The Eye Site in Artesia full time.
Dr. Powell grew up in Tatum, NM and graduated from Tatum High School as salutatorian of her class. She played sports and was involved in 4-H and FFA, showing livestock at Fairs. She earned her bachelor’s degree in science and biochemistry from West Texas A&M University in 2001. During summer vacations, she worked for The Eye Site in Hobbs. Growing up in a small town, Dr. Powell knew she wanted to come back to New Mexico and practice optometry in a small town. In 2005, she was given the opportunity to do this at The Eye Site in Artesia. In 2007, Dr. Powell married Leo Sandmann, and together they have three children, Colton, Caige, and Bristol Sandmann, ages 15, 12, and 10 respectively. Her kids are involved in the First Methodist church, sports, and 4-H, and they show lambs at the Eddy County Fair.
Dr. Powell stays involved in the community by supporting the Artesia Public Schools’ organizations, including sports and FFA. She and her husband coach Little League baseball, City League football, and Seek 1st Football. She raises show lambs for her kids and others to show at the county fairs. She supports the Eddy County Youth Supporters, 4-H, and FFA youth by purchasing livestock sold at the Eddy County Fair sale every year. Dr. Powell offers low vision clinics for visually impaired kids twice a year. She also provides exams and glasses for special needs patients, Written in Red Foundation, Lions Club, and for the Second Pair Program at the schools.
At the Eye Site, Dr. Powell provides comprehensive eye health care. She and her staff provide the most precise prescriptive lenses for all your vision needs. Dr. Powell fits soft, rigid, and scleral contact lenses, even for high astigmatism and keratoconus patients. She can remove foreign bodies, treat welding and chemical burns, and treat red, infected eyes. With the technology available there, she can diagnose and manage many eye problems including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. She is able to treat dry eye with the latest technology in Lipiflow and Low Level Light Therapy. The office also provides supplements and drops for dry eye, macular degeneration, and now diabetes.
This business is unique because the staff takes the time to get to know the patients on a personal level. They provide the highest quality eye care with the most up to date technology. The optical department provides eyewear in all price ranges and has the most experienced staff in the business. They truly care about their patients.
The Eye Site will be moving to a new location located at 1455 S. 26th Street in Artesia in September. The new building will be twice the size of the old location and will provide more efficient eye care for the patients of Artesia and surrounding areas. Dr. Powell and her staff are super excited about the new location and all it will have to offer their patients. They will continue to use the highest technology to diagnose and manage glaucoma, macular degeneration, and dry eye, while also providing a friendly customer shopping experience for all your eyewear needs.
