Carlsbad High School (CHS) Literacy Club hosted its first Open Mic Night on Tuesday May 2, 2023. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 am before school to discuss books they’ve read and write poems and share them with each other.
Approximately 50 students attended the event and about half participated in Open Mic Night. Some students played a musical instrument, others sang, but most recited poetry or excerpts from various forms of media.
If a student did not want to recite a poem they had written, there was a selection of poems for them to recite. Participants read excerpts from books like Gilgamesh, one read the FFA creed, and another quoted an ending line from a video game.
Future plans for the club include entering writing competitions and doing story time with the library. Look for more great happenings from this club in the next school year.
