Downtown is important because it’s the heart and soul of any community. If you don’t have a healthy downtown, you simply don’t have a healthy town.
– Ed McMahon Chair Emeritus, National Main Street Center Board of Directors
Just call us Dr. MainStreet. For over 25 years, Artesia MainStreet has proudly fostered the economic development of our historic downtown while supporting our very active and vibrant MainStreet community. Downtown Artesia is comprised of a remarkably diverse set of businesses, groups, and organizations. The diversity of our MainStreet district is the heartbeat of our city; driving the economic, civic, and creative landscape that our community is proud to display.
Artesia MainStreet is one of thirty affiliated MainStreet districts within the New Mexico MainStreet Program. Funded in 1985 by the New Mexico State Legislature to assist local communities in implementing the MainStreet Four-Point Approach to commercial district revitalization: Organization, Design, Promotion, and Economic Vitality, New Mexico MainStreet is designated a “Main Street America Coordinating Program” by the National Main Street Center, Inc., a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Artesia MainStreet will be renewing efforts to bring fun and vitality to our downtown district in 2023.
Here’s what’s to come in 2023!
Car Show – April 1
Red Dirt Black Gold – September 30
Trick or Treat MainStreet – October 28
Light Up Artesia – November 30
MainStreet is not only a place of commerce, but also a place of community. Gather on the lawn of the Derrick Floor for an impromptu picnic. Turn downtown’s impressive mural trail into a social media sensation. Hello selfie stations! Heritage Walkway is the perfect location for a DIY scavenger hunt. Bike down Eagle Draw and stop in for refreshments at one of Downtown’s eateries. Let MainStreet help with your personal health goals too! Running, walking, and biking on and around Main Street never grows boring with so much to see and plenty of refreshing new routes to try.
Artesia’s MainStreet merchants are making major contributions to the bottom line of our town. When you spend in Artesia, more of your money stays in Artesia: $68 out of $100 stays here when shopping local.

Gross tax receipts collected from local merchants contribute to infrastructure, education, public health, and public services, like fire and police. Not only are you “giving back” to our community when you shop and dine downtown, you are also supporting your friends, neighbors, and community members. The economic health of our entire community depends on it.
Artesia is something special. We have the wow factor—murals, theaters, bronze sculptures, creative and fun entrepreneurs, and much more—without sacrificing our charm.
In 2023, Artesia MainStreet hopes you will join us to LIVE LARGE in a small town!
