Basketball fans will have a couple playoff games to attend this weekend. 

Carlsbad’s boys beat Hobbs on Friday to win this year’s district tournament. The Cavemen, who now have a 20-7 record, received the No. 6 seed, and they will host La Cueva in a playoff game on Saturday. District rival Hobbs is seeded 12th in the state tournament. 

Despite not reaching the finals in the district tournament, the Carlsbad Cavegirls had a great overall season and picked up a No. 4 seed. The Cavegirls, who lost to Clovis last week, will host Cleveland at 6 p.m on Friday, March 3. The Cavegirls have a 23-5 record overall that includes one win over District rival Hobbs, who picked up the No. 1 seed in the state.

Last week, Carlsbad’s girls placed 8th at the state swim meet and set three new school records. Sophie Corder placed 2nd in the 100 fly and 3rd in the 200 IM. The 400 freestyle team also set a new school record, while Collette Dhenin finished in 4th place in the 100 backstroke. Gabe Whittmayer led the Cavemen with an 11th place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

In wrestling, the Cavemen placed 13th in the state tournament while the Cavegirls placed 15th Carlsbad’s wrestling teams were led by Marcus Najera and Rosailia Rubio, who each finished second. Luke Waters and Danica Medina were also standouts for Carlsbad’s wrestling squads. 

While basketball is moving forward with the playoffs, spring sports season is also well underway. Carlsbad’s baseball team is now 4-1. Over the weekend, the Cavemen lost to Americas, 8-1, and then beat Eastwood, 5-4.
