Three days after placing second in the Hope Christian Basketball Tournament, the Lady Dogs beat the Roswell Coyotes on Monday, January 17 in a non-conference win. This brings the Lady Dogs to a 11-7 overall record, a second place standing in 4A district 4, and a sixth place ranking in New Mexico class 4A. 
 
The Coyote’s record is now 9-10 overall and are currently ranked #17 in Division 5A. 
 
After Sophomore Hattie Harrison won the tip off Senior Koda Beltran started the scoring with a three-point field goal, followed by a three-point field goal by her sister Junior Kymber Beltran. Junior Lorin Wagner sunk 2 points. Roswell’s Sophomore Alayna Tarin then made the first two points for Roswell, followed by Senior Daci Smith with 2 more. Wagner put away 2 more followed by Roswell’s Sophomore Bryana Castro with two in a row. The first quarter ended at 12-8.
 
The Lady Dogs allowed 12 points in the second half with Harrison putting up 2 points, freshman Kailee Padilla 3 and Kymber Beltran 4. The first quarter ended at 22-20.
 
The Lady Dogs refined their offense even more and outscored Roswell by 15 points to 4 points; ending the third quarter 37-24.
 
The domination continued in the fourth quarter with Koda Beltran sinking a three-point field goal to start the quarter, followed by free throws by Senior Audrey Velo and Harrison. Koda Beltran was fouled shooting a three-pointer and sunk all 3 free throws. Roswell’s Castro hit a free throw and a two-point field goal before the game ended at 46-27. 
 
“I’m so proud of the girls and their effort,” said Jeff Houghtaling, head coach for the Lady Dogs. “Everyone did their part. The team is progressing in the right direction as we approach district.”
 
Final stats for the Lady Dogs: Audrey Velo 4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists; Carmen Harvey 1 rebound; Myra Jimenez 1 assist; Kailee Padilla 3 points; Koda Beltran 9 points, 4 assists; Jenna Whitmire 4 points; Hattie Harrison 6 points, 1 rebound; Kymber Beltran 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist; Lorin Wagner 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 assist. 
 
Final scoring for the Coyotes: Alayna Tarin 8; Bryana Castro 7; Emma Esquivel 4; Misha Henthorn 2; Sarai Morales 2; Mylah Moore 2; Daci Smith 2.
 
The Lady Dogs next game is Friday, January 20 at Hobbs. The JV game starts at 4:00 p.m., followed by the varsity at 5:30 p.m.
