It is the most wonderful time of the year, and this winter weather is the perfect time to cozy up with your favorite book (or magazine)!
FocusNM is your source for all things local in Southeast NM; from community news to lifestyle and events — we strive to provide our readers with a better understanding of the world around us. In this special winter regional edition of FocusNM magazine, we are learning more about the wide range of industries that create a sustainable and diverse economy in the state of New Mexico.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, it is evident that New Mexico is living up to its state motto Crescit Eundo (which translates to “It grows as it goes”). Our state continues to experience development within its economic pillars while simultaneously expanding into new ventures. With approximately 310 days of sunshine per year and a competitive tax climate, New Mexico has become a desirable location for a wide range of industries.
Historically, New Mexico has relied on its climate and natural resources to provide jobs and economic opportunity for its citizens. For most, New Mexico is known as a mining and ranching state. Energy, retail, agriculture, aerospace, tourism, and film are some of our state’s other thriving industries. Each of these sectors represents a piece to the complex puzzle that makes up a progressive and prosperous economy for our state, and each piece must collaborate to ensure the overall success of our local communities.
From the mainstay industries — like energy and retail to more eccentric industries — like microbreweries and art, this magazine is jam-packed with stories straight from our local community members and businesses. Every industry plays an important role in the daily lives of New Mexicans, and it is exciting to see growth and expansion at home.
New Mexico was nicknamed “The Land of Enchantment” not only for its scenic beauty but for its rich culture and unique heritage. With two worldwide festivals (Balloon Fiesta and UFO Festival), multiple national parks, scenic byways, and historical sites, New Mexico attracts millions of tourists every year. Tourism is one of the largest employment and revenue sectors for New Mexico, so check out the winter destination guide on page 42 to support New Mexico’s outdoor economy.
I would like to send a special thank you to you, our readers, for returning to our publication. I also encourage you to continue supporting us by supporting our advertisers. I hope this season lets you reflect on all the good there is in our state. Our strong sense of community makes Southeast New Mexico such a great place to live!
