It’s time to rally civic group, youth group, sports teams, or your coworkers to participate in a weeklong competition September 17-24, 2022, to clean up public lands in Eddy County.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carlsbad field office is partnering with Eddy County and the cities of Artesia and Carlsbad to host Better Together, an expansion of the National Public Lands Day into a week of trash cleanup in Eddy County. Better Together will foster healthy rivalries and civic engagement.

After cleaning up participating groups or individuals must submit an online form accessed through QR codes posted near all dumpsters and on Better Together flyers. They will be required to submit documentation of trash collected, number of participants, and choose if their points should go toward the Artesia or the Carlsbad total. Submissions can also be emailed to Better.Together.NPLD@gmail.com.

Participants can use maps with known trash locations provided by the BLM and roll-off dumpsters provided by municipal and industry partners. Maps can be found here: https://arcg.is/49CrH0.

A “Golden Tire Award” will be presented to the municipality whose citizens collectively remove the most trash from our county’s public spaces. Prizes will also be awarded for the largest amount of trash cleaned at a single event, most participants at a single event, and most trash picked up by a single group or individual over the weeklong event.

Public lands include national parks, monuments, wildlife refuges, forests, grasslands, marine sanctuaries, lakes, and reservoirs, as well as state, county, and city parks that are managed by federal, state, and local governments. More information about National Public Lands Day can be found at www.publiclandsday.org.
