Who are the folks wearing the yellow vests during community events in town?

They are members of the Artesia Downtown Lions Club! Lions Club is a community service organization which meets weekly at First Baptist Church at noon for lunch and a program from a variety of community speakers. Come and preview the meetings as a guest and see what they are all about. Before checking out a meeting, read on for details about all of the projects and ways that Lions contribute to the community.

The Artesia Chapter of Downtown Lions contributes in a variety of ways to the community of Artesia. One project includes food and necessity baskets at Christmas. These baskets are a collaborative effort between Lions Club, Deans Electric, and Desert Hills Electric Supply Company. Local Lions also coordinate eye screenings at Artesia Head Start, the Early Education Center, and the elementary schools in Artesia. The club is also equipped to help purchase eyeglasses for children and adults in need. A routine exercise for the organization is to set up flags on stands downtown with the Junior Lions members. (Junior Lions is for high school seniors and is also a part of the community service organization.) Lions Club offers a few scholarships to members of the Junior Lions. According to Missy Williams, the current President of Lions Club, one of the most rewarding experiences is when a Junior Lion returns and joins the ranks of the Artesia Downtown Lions.

The Lions Club hosts several fundraisers every year: the Artesia Downtown Lions Club Golf Scramble in early April, a tailgate meal in the fall during football season, and, this year, a gun raffle to support the 94th state convention of the Lions Club in Artesia.

Be on the lookout for all of the ways this organization benefits the community and how you can support them as well!

Lions serve. It’s that simple, and it has been since we first began in 1917. Our clubs are places where individuals join together to give their valuable time and effort to improving their communities, and the world.
