Stylish Suits at Artesia Historical Museum Stylish Suits at Artesia Historical Museum

Document
As the heat wave intensified this week, Artesians either hit the Aquatic Center, backyard pools, or escaped indoors and into refrigerated air, otherwise known as air conditioning. The pursuit of cooler temperatures gives moments of pause to reflect on what the early Artesians experienced in the desert around the turn of the last century when the summer sun beat down relentlessly against the red dirt and spiny plants. How did those early settlers of Artesia do it? How did they keep cool before all of these modern amenities which makes the heat tolerable?

Those early Artesians were resilient and resourceful because not only did they manage the heat without the benefit of electricity to power cooling equipment, but they also managed the heat wearing garments made from only natural materials and fibers. Cotton was widely available at this point in history and is well-known to be breathable fiber, yet, as anyone who has worn cotton material for long periods of time can attest, the fabric tends to become swampy and retain moisture after a while. The Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center explores the subject of the clothing and fashion in their curated display of Stylish Suits. Stylish Suits is a new exhibit featuring the fashion and textiles of the 1900s.The exhibit puts added emphasis on the fact that those first Artesias kept their cool in ways long forgotten by present day citizens, but looked stylish while beating the heat.
