The recent forest fires ravaging the southern half of the state have displaced many adamant campers and outdoor enthusiasts this 2022 summer. Not only have those who crave the forest felt the limitations of this fire season, but the wildlife have as well.
Many native creatures both great and small feel the effects of the dry conditions exacerbated by the flames of numerous fires. When wildfires occur, wildlife of all kinds flee from the heat and burning flames. With survival a priority, wildlife ends up in many unexpected locations where people may not normally encounter them: backyards, city streets, pools, parks, and more.
Wildlife likely haven’t intended to hang out in heavily human populated locations, but when displaced by fire they may become disoriented or simply left with no place else to go. If community members come across wildlife in atypical locations where they are unsafe, please call the Game and Fish Department. The number to call in New Mexico is 1-888-248-6866 or the Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Carlsbad at 1-575-689-6711for guidance.
According to the Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center’s website, if you encounter a wild animal “give them plenty of space, don’t be threatening, don’t run, always be careful when in the outdoors.” Read more about what to do in the event of a wildlife encounter here: Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (dwwrc.org)
