At a public safety meeting hosted by Women for a Better Artesia, Artesia Police Department Commander, Pete Quinones, reported that the community doesn’t face any major crimes like scams or chain burglars at present; however, our crossroad community sees the effects of the recent legalization of cannabis. Cannabis infused snacks, like chips, sodas, and candy with THC, are present in the community. These products have the appearance of familiar grocery-store products which can easily end up in the possession of minors. Be aware of the products you consume around minors and store them out of reach. Educate children about the legal and health risks of consuming cannabis products underage.

Vaping is another issue facing minors at present. With the legalization of cannabis, THC can be sold in vape cartridges which can make their way into the hands of community youth. THC affects brain development in youth which can lead to lasting health issues including impairing neurological connections. These impaired connections are found in areas of the brain associated with concentration, thinking, sensory and time perception, pleasure, memory, and coordination. Zia Intermediate School launched an anti-vaping campaign to help educate students and parents about the problems of vaping and THC related products.

Officer Quinones continued, during his speaking time at the luncheon, that the department is trying to work directly with the community. The department uses a few different ways to connect. He encouraged those in attendance to call the non-emergency line for any suspicious activity or with concerns you may have. The non-emergency line is (575) 616-7155. The department also used their Facebook page yesterday to share a wanted poster and within hours the suspect was in police custody because of community participation on social media.

On another social media related topic, if you purchase something off of Facebook Marketplace, please go to the swap area at the Public Safety Complex at 3300 West Main Street where there are lights and 24 hour video surveillance or consider another public place like the Wal-Mart parking lot to conduct exchanges.

In conclusion, Officer Quinones discussed the homeless population in Artesia has increased significantly since 2020. Please be advised to stay vigilant aware of your surroundings.
