A few weeks back, Focus began the search for heartwarming stories of community members hard at work giving back to the town and to the people, and Focus received this thoughtful response:
My mom is Darlene Chavarria, and, of course, I may be a little biased, but she is always volunteering for something or is randomly helping people in some way around town. She is the President of the Artesia Youth Soccer League, helps with Little League Baseball, and volunteers at church or with our church.
She is so kind and is always willing to put others first. One time at her restaurant, Wings, we had a customer ask if our tortillas were homemade, and we told him that they were store bought. Without missing a beat, my mom was making homemade tortillas for him from scratch.
I’m not sure if that qualifies her for a spotlight place in Focus (Focus thinks this does!), but I think she is a pretty great volunteer and business owner.
Focus loves writing the stories of great people doing wonderful things, but when we receive such meaningful messages, we feel those words speak volumes. Raven Chavarria, Darlene’s daughter, speaks from her experience of watching Momma C at work around the community and illustrates her positive impact.
While owning Wings, LLC, Darlene, Momma C, also works as a land technician in the environmental department of Yates Holdings. She is a busy lady but still finds time to volunteer and give back to the community. Volunteerism is about participating with fellow community members to improve the experience for others, and a vital role that everyone can play despite personal commitments; there are a multitude of ways to lend a hand that require very little time or energy. Sign up to bring snacks, create a few coaching drills, use your skills to make pieces of equipment—the list of ideas is seemingly endless.
Children are our future, so being a part of organizations specifically for youth means that the future is brighter for the kids of Artesia. As spring emerges, Artesia Youth Soccer and Little League will ask for volunteers to coach, to line judge, and to keep score. Consider joining Momma C in creating a fun, engaging environment for kids and their families in Artesia. A little time now pays dividends in the future when it comes to volunteering in our community.
