Polls for the 2022 mayoral and city council elections had disportionately long lines at Faith Baptist Church and no lines at the Artesia Senior Center the evening of the election. Long lines at the polls at Faith Baptist Church and no lines at the Senior Center meant that some Artesians waited in line for up to 35 minutes at the peak of the rush to the polls. Others simply walked into the doors of the Senior Center, picked up their ballot, filled it out, cast it into the counting machine, and returned to their vehicles without a long queue.
Far fewer ballots were cast at the Senior Center than at Faith Baptist Church. The polling locations were advertised in the Focus NM Daily, the local newspaper, KSVP productions, various Facebook pages and groups, as well as in the Chamber of Commerce’s detailed Chamber Chat, a weekly listserv publication. By 7 pm just over 250 ballots were cast at the Senior Center as opposed to the many hundreds cast at Faith Baptist.
