Boy Scouts Troop 228 unveiled its new scout project this past weekend at “Scout Sunday” at First United Methodist Church February 6, 2022. The new project is titled “Mission 101” in honor of the recently passed WWII veteran and longtime Artesia resident, Charles “Chuck” Joy. Mr. Joy recently celebrated his 101st birthday and Mission 101 seeks to commemorate that longevity with a goal to hike 101 miles.

Individual scouts who complete Mission 101 by hiking 100 miles will earn a custom patch created by Troop 228. The patch has Lt. Colonel Charles “Chuck” Joy emblazoned at the top with an image of a bomber plane which Mr. Joy completed missions in taking central position.

Mission 101 plays off of the Boy Scouts of America wisdom that a pair of hiking boots isn’t entirely broken in until they’ve logged 100 miles on the trail. The goal of hiking an additional mile for a total of 101 miles is a nod to the idea that going the extra mile often yields opportunities than are not anticipated or expected at the time.
