City of Carlsbad challenges NM Redistricting Maps

Congress-Map-A

On Tuesday, Carlsbad City Council passed an important resolution expressing concern over the ongoing state redistricting process, specifically as related to our United States Congressional District.  We believe that some of the proposed maps are an attempt to dilute the rural vote from the southern portion of the state by proposing maps that divide the communities of Southeastern New Mexico into all three Congressional districts.

The City of Carlsbad’s resolution called upon the state to adopt a map for the Second Congressional district that fairly considers our current area’s cultural, economic and social identity.  There have also even been concerns raised in media reports of people being offered money to support certain proposals. We encourage residents of Southeast New Mexico to comment by visiting https://portal.newmexico-mapping.org/

There will also be a redistricting meeting on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. You can watch the meeting here: https://www.nmredistricting.org/event/crc-meeting-adoption-of-maps-to-be-recommended-to-legislature/ and there will also be an opportunity for verbal comment. At this meeting, the committee is expected to make its initial recommendations.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
