There was a great attendance this year at the Firefighter Combat Challenge, held this year in downtown Carlsbad. The Carlsbad Fire Department’s “C-Bad Rooks” team placed third in the relay competition this year with a time of 1:36. Team members are Brandon Lee, Christian Rodriguez, Andy Delfin, Kirby Wheeler and Christian Johnson.
Carlsbad’s Team Stevo also competed this weekend. Team members were Steve Dorado, Jacob Dorado, Robert Trautner, Michael Huetner and Dylan Munoz.
Carlsbad had five competitors in the individual race: Kirby Wheeler, Michael Huettner, Christian Johnson, Andy Delfin and Brandon Lee. Carlsbad’s tandem team of Sam Soto and Lonnie Salazar ran a time of 2:26.
It was a good competition for Hobbs. Rodney Smith won first place with a time of 1:21, and Hobbs took first place in the relay with a time of 1:09. We were honored to have other local teams, such as the WIPP Fire Department, also compete. Special thanks to our Carlsbad businesses for helping host this downtown event, as well as Carlsbad MainStreet and Pearl on the Pecos. The Carlsbad Fire Department did a great job as the host team.
We have been told that the “On Target” crew really enjoyed coming to Carlsbad and thanked us for the great hospitality. They are looking forward to working with us in the future and they are excited about coming back next year. There was also a great turnout at the event’s car show, hosted as always by the CARS Club. Finally, thank you to our talented local groups who performed- Groupo Veneno, JD and the Badlands and Mark Powell. Our summer concert series will resume this Saturday at 7 p.m. with a performance by local rock band Stranded. The performance will be at the Water Park Gazebo.
We are still receiving questions about information provided in August that a congregate facility in Carlsbad was under potential consideration to serve as a migrant processing location for families. Since then, we have not received any information from the federal or state government about this issue. We have heard, from reliable sources, that Carlsbad is not under consideration.
Funeral services for 12-year-old Brent Sullivan are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Church of Christ with Brian McGonagill officiating. We have been informed that Brent’s funeral costs have been paid for, though donations can still be made to Sunset Church of Christ. Our entire community still grieves over this tragic loss.
