There’s an important discussion going on related to the future of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). WIPP is currently seeking what’s called a Class 3 Permit Modification request to add two more panels to the facility – Units 11 and 12. This proposal doesn’t change the underground capacity at WIPP- it simply adds space to make up for lost real estate during earlier phases of the process. Some disposal capacity was lost in a few of the panels earlier due to ground conditions and because of 2014’s radiological event. Additionally, WIPP had originally planned to turn the drifts leading to the original eight panels into disposal space, but an engineering study showed that is no longer the preferred option.
I’ve submitted a letter in support of approval of these two new panels and I encourage others in Carlsbad to do the same. WIPP is a source of pride for many in our community, and it plays a vital role in our national security.
