Remember all that really good rain we had a few weeks back? It was raining some nearly every day. In this area, we already had through June what we had all year in 2020. The rains were nice. The cotton is growing. The peanuts look great. Our pastures are green. Sadly, weeds are six feet tall! But still, rain, as the song says, is a good thing!
But here we are just a couple of weeks removed from water standing in the furrows, to needing a rain. It has been hot and it has been dry. Irrigation systems, which had gotten a nice rest, are cranking up again. It just seems like the moisture from the rains goes away so quickly. And here we are, once again, searching the skies and asking God to provide us with rainfall.
This is exactly how we are spiritually. We need to be watered by the Word of God on a daily basis. We need to be spending time with Him each day. If we are not doing this, we are living a spiritually dry life. Just the facts! Just like our crop and our lawns need water to grow and be healthy, our hearts and minds need time with God to grow and be healthy as Christians.
We are called as Christians to “bear fruit.” Without proper care, as in reading the Bible, spending time with God, and spending time with God’s people, it becomes difficult, if not impossible to bear the kind of fruit that would lead others to know Jesus. We have to be watered in His Word.
In Jeremiah 17:7-8, it states, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
Do you see that beautiful picture? That is just how we are! When our trust is in Him and we are spending time by the waters, (reading God’s Word, spending time with Him, joining others in worship), we are like a tree planted by the waters. When hard times come, and they will, we won’t be shaken because our roots are deep in Him. We have nothing to fear, because our hearts are strong like the new green leaves. And we will never stop yielding fruit for Him!
Oh my goodness! I just want to shout even as I write this, for this God is mine! And He will carry us through whatever comes our way. But our roots need to be strong and deep and that only comes through spending time in His Waters, His Word. With His people. Serving Him. Loving Him.
He is strong enough. The question is, will you let Him be strong in you? When your faith is in Him and your trust is in Him, and you are refreshed each day in His Word, you will truly be like that tree planted by the water. You will not be moved. No matter what comes your way. You will find your strength in Him.
Are you watering your life regularly with His Word, His love. His promise. His people? It will make a difference!!
