A Note From Mayor Dale Janway

It seems like Carlsbad has had a great deal of very sad news recently. On Wednesday morning, we learned that Dorothy Perkowski has passed away. Dorothy is the wife of former Mayor Gary Perkowski, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to Gary and everyone in the family. Dorothy was well loved by everyone who knew her. She was one of the most outgoing people in Carlsbad and she made friends wherever she went, at times almost immediately. Dorothy was a teacher who also volunteered for many years at the front desk at Carlsbad Medical Center. Recently, while hospitalized, we’re told that Dorothy was receiving such a continual stream of visitors that the hospital practically had to rethink its visitation policy – she never met a stranger. Dorothy Perkowski will be greatly missed.

The City of Carlsbad also wishes to offer condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Current-Argus Sports Editor Matthew Asher, who passed away earlier this week. Asher had a great rapport with the coaches and players in Carlsbad, Loving and Artesia. He was a talented writer who was well liked for his willingness to share extra photos with family members of players. He brought a very high level of enthusiasm to his coverage – especially when it came to the accomplishments of Trevor Rogers or the Cavegirls winning the soccer state championship. Sports editor is a very important job in a city as crazy about sports as Carlsbad, certainly going all the way back to the legendary Roy Hall. Asher’s sports coverage brought happiness to many Carlsbad athletes and their families, and he will be missed.
