When you think of art what is the first thought that comes to mind?

The typical answer to that question for many people could be an expensive painting hanging on a wall. By the end of this article, their initial answer to that question might change. As the Executive Director of the Pearl of the Pecos Arts & Culture District, I feel art is so much more. I like to view art as a collection of many variations. In the broader sense of the term, art is a form of communication. It means whatever the artist intended it to mean and how people interpret that is completely up to them. In a sense, what makes art so unique and personal to every individual that one encounters is almost a conversation between the artist and yourself. It is never the same conversation over and over again.

My hopes, through Carlsbad’s vibrant Arts & Cultural District, are to make art accessible to people from all walks of life, no matter their status or stage. I would like to invite you to take a walk into the Pearl of the Pecos, Carlsbad’s Arts & Cultural District in the heart of downtown. Stop for a moment, take a look around and what do you see? I see the art of literacy being displayed at the library, the art of beautiful sculptures and murals of our Halagueno Arts park, the art of history and culture displayed in our local Hall of Fame at the museum, the art of culinary that may come from any of our great local restaurants, the art of music echoing down the street from our local brewery, the art of fitness being shown through martial arts, Pilates, yoga, and lunch break walks, the art of design through our print and embroidery stores, the art of decoration through stunning displays in our jewelry stores, the art of cosmetology through any of the great day spas, salons, and beauty college in the district, the art of fashion being displayed in the windows of our boutique stores, and the art of creation and craft through many of our great retail stores.

I also encourage you to take a close look at some collections of unique art forms. The Artist Gallery is a collection of many different artists coming together in a cooperative environment to share, display, and sell their one-of-a-kind art pieces. Our antique malls, Pecos River Antique Mall and Always Junkin’, are unique collections of art in their own right because they bring together history, treasures, and trinkets from many eras in one collective space. Pistol Packin Cowgirls offers visitors far more than their name would lead you to believe. They offer a collection of fine art, sculptures, and one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry, accessories, and fashion pieces under one roof. Treasured Moments is a collection of many different pages and tools, when brought together, create memories through cards, scrapbooks, and so much more.

Through this brief look into the abundant collection of art variations the Pearl of the Pecos has to offer, I hope to have helped you appreciate and become aware of the many different art forms that surround us every day. Once again, when you think of art, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
