Update from Mayor Dale Janway

Mother’s Day in 2020 was not a happy time in Carlsbad. We were in the middle of one of the most severe COVID-19 shutdown periods, and many local businesses were trying to figure out how they were going to survive the spring. We also didn’t know very much about the disease at the time, only that it appeared to be devastating to some members of our community.

This year, it’s wonderful seeing businesses back open and people out shopping for their moms. We also have a lot better understanding of COVID-19 this year, including a readily available vaccine. Over the last few months, people have been getting to visit all of the mothers and grandmothers they may have not seen during the previous year. Mother’s Day this 2021 is a time with a lot of hope on the horizon.

Over the past year, mothers have had to adapt as much or more as anyone else. Many working moms have had to learn to help facilitate online studies of their children while participating in their own online meetings, sometimes with limited internet service. They’ve had to deal with many additional anxieties when sports, band and other activities were altered or cancelled.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone out there and thank you all for doing such a great job at the world’s most important job.

On Monday through Thursday this week, the Carlsbad Fire Department will be around town training new engineers on its ladder trucks. If you see the Carlsbad Fire Department going up the side of a building, it’s probably OK- they are just in training. The Carlsbad Police Department will be hosting a charity golf tournament on May 22.  It will be a four-man scramble to benefit the Special Olympics. For more information, please call Orlando Moreno at (575) 885-2111.

Sports Watch: In Friday’s win over the Milwaukee Brewers, Trevor Rogers allowed just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six. He improved to 4-2 and moved his ERA to 1.89. The Carlsbad Cavegirl softball team is now 3-1 – the Cavegirls beat Lovington on Tuesday and then lost to Artesia on Friday.

Thank you for the invitation from the Early College High School to participate in their 2021-2022 Student Council induction ceremony. We’ve had a great working relationship with the Early College High School and look forward to working with them.  Congratulations on a great event.  We look forward to many more end of year ceremonies with the early college, the college, the high school and Jefferson Montessori Academy.
