In this issue of Focus on Artesia we are showcasing local community members who have a knack for collecting and an eye for antiques.
As we began searching for local collectors, we realized that everybody collects something. It was difficult to narrow down the articles but we wanted to focus on those who were passionate about what they collect, the “aficionados of Artesia,” if you will. From stamps to classic cars and so much more, there are no limitations on what people collect.
There are different motivational factors for each collection; for some it’s the connection to history, for others it’s the thrill of the hunt. Some people just enjoy finding rare objects. Regardless of why they started, many people continue collecting because they enjoy the social interaction and community of people they meet. When conducting these interviews, I’ve learned that there is a hobby group or club for just about every interest.
Oftentimes, nostalgic collectors hold an emotional connection with their items. As a kid, I collected Ty Beanie Babies; small plush animal characters that lined the walls of my pink bedroom. Every now and then I’ll pull them out of storage and my kids will play for hours. They are small reminders that bring back happy memories of simpler times.
I hope you enjoy reading these stories and learning about our local collectors. Beyond the specifics of their collections, each of their stories demonstrates a life of enthusiasm and can serve as an inspiration to us all.
As always, I’d like to thank the advertisers who have continued to support our publication through what has been a difficult season for small business.
