A new idea from Devon Energy to make the season brighter means hundreds of families in southeast New Mexico will have a happier holiday.
Devon worked with the United Way in Eddy and Lea counties to launch Project Santa to fulfill children’s holiday wish lists. Devon’s personnel divided into east and west teams to see who could donate the most toys and other items.
They ended up providing more than 1,200 gifts, shattering previous giving records.
“Our people are always ready to jump in and provide a bright spot, especially for children,” Devon Senior Community Relations Specialist Shannon Johnson said. “This year has been hard on everyone, so we knew our employees would want to go the extra mile. But we had no idea they would contribute one thousand toys more than ever before. The generosity and good neighbor spirit of these employees is simply unmatched!”
Because Devon and other companies have been such good little elves this year, Project Santa is able to fill the wish lists of every child who made a request and even provide gifts to additional families in need in Eddy and Lea counties.
Becca Titus, the director of the United Way of Lea County, thanked Devon for collaborating on Project Santa.
“Devon stepped up in a big way, and they helped create momentum in the community for others who want to help make Christmas great,” Titus said. “Our entrance looks like Santa’s workshop, and the gifts keep coming in. Every day is like Christmas! We are thankful Devon’s employees are so generous.”
United Way of Eddy County Linda Dodd also commended Devon.
“The heart and passion for helping the less fortunate during this holiday season is a prime example of what Devon employees do year-round,” Dodd said. “Our community is blessed beyond measure to have Devon’s support and willingness to go above and beyond the normal day-to-day hustle and bustle. When we go to bed on Christmas Eve, we can all rest peacefully knowing the joy of Christmas magic will be felt by hundreds of children.”
