Obituary for Wanda (Funk) Whatley

Graveside services are scheduled for Wanda Whatley  Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at Lake Arthur Cemetery for Wanda Whatley of Cloudcroft, New Mexico.

Gary Truex will officiate at the service.

Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Wednesday, December 16.

Mrs. Whately, 93, died December 10, 2020 at the Betty Dare Nursing Facility in Alamogordo, N.M.

Wanda was born May 5, 1927 on a  Cottonwood N.M. farm, the daughter of Kersey Funk and Tempie (Southard) Funk.

Wanda was the second of eight children.    She graduated from Lake Arthur High School in 1944.

She was married in 1946 to W. F. Whatley  in a Las Vegas, Nevada wedding chapel.  Three and a half years later they were the parents of Katie, Mary and Steve.

Wanda served as the Lake Arthur Town Clerk,  was a member of the Lake Arthur Water Board.   She donated land for the Lake Arthur Senior Center and was an active member of the center.   She was an accomplished seamstress winning numerous blue and purple ribbons at the State Fair.  She was a life long member of the Church of Christ.   Wanda was a
teacher’s aide at Villa Solano State School,  a Special Education Teacher and  Learning Disability Diagnostician for many years.   After retirement she nursed terminally ill family members and cared for her aging parents.

She was predeceased in death by her husband W. F. ,  son Steve, her parents and seven siblings.

She is survived by her daughter Katie Lard and husband Ronald Lard,  daughter  Mary Rohr and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.    She was an avid reader,  community worker, teacher,  Christain wife, mother and grandmother.  She truly deserves a rest in heaven.
