Originally the gallery opened in a small room of the Women’s Club building 40 years ago and began its operations under the umbrella of Carlsbad Area Art Association. As interest grew, new artists were added and bigger accommodations were necessary. Settling into its permanent home in the historic Downtown Carlsbad area with the help and encouragement of many art patrons and local businesses, CAAA purchased the building at 120 South Canyon Street. A Board of Directors oversees the operations of the gallery and currently two co-directors, Pat Beason and Daina Taylor, take care of the day-to-day duties.

A unique aspect of The Artist Gallery is that it is a Co-Op gallery, which means that its entirely operated by the members: administered, staffed, promoted, and cleaned by its members. The fact that it has been in business forty years puts it in the top longevity-category among co-op galleries nationwide. The gallery members are dedicated to educating and assisting potential clients about their own and their fellow artists’ works of art. Diversity is an important aspect of media available at the gallery. Staying involved in the community is vital for The Artist Gallery. They host several important community events each year including an Art Walk, an Anniversary Gala, several art challenges, a Celebration of Mothers event in addition to participating in Mainstreet Events and the offering of educational classes. The CAAA Robert S. Light Art Room in the building with the Artist Gallery is available for various community organizations to hold meetings. Rotary International, The Chamber of Commerce, and AAUW are among organizations that have met there. The Artist Gallery brings a fun group of community citizens together for its one awesome sale each year, The Red Hot Red Dot Sale, with many items in the gallery marked down by 40%. The next outstanding event on the calendar is the annual ART WALK, “FELIZ NAVIDAD,” November 20. Accompanied by live music and festive refreshments, guests are invited to walk the downtown area, and visit participating art-related businesses, interact with their friends and get acquainted with the artists and their methods of making the works.
