A note from Eric Greer, principal of AHS:
“During this time students have not been in school, the AHS Graduating Class of 2020 has constantly been on our minds. I am sad that your senior year was cut short and that sports, activities, and senior year culminating activities were interrupted. How you will be recognized and honored has been a topic of discussion for several weeks now. This week the AHS Administration, APS Administration, AHS Staff representatives, and (more importantly) your Student Representatives have devised a plan to honor and recognize the AHS Graduating Class of 2020 amid the public health order restrictions. Initial details are communicated below, and there will be more details outlined as time nears each event. Be looking for details to come through Microsoft Teams, Reminds, emails, etc.
On Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 6:30 PM there will be a Class of 2020 Senior Recognition Parade. There will be various locations (parking lots along the parade route) where the public will be able to park their vehicles to show support and see seniors as they drive by. The attached map shows the route of the parade. The parade will culminate at Bulldog Bowl Parking Lot where each senior will stop in front of the arched Bulldog Bowl sign to have their name announced and receive their “goodie bag.” One family vehicle per senior will be allowed in the Bulldog Bowl parking lot; this does not include the vehicle Seniors will be riding in. On Tuesday May 5, each Senior will receive a ticket that will allow your one family vehicle to enter the Bulldog Bowl. After your name is announced, you will then join the other vehicles in the parking lot to enjoy watching your fellow classmates. Once the last senior is announced, we will celebrate by playing your class song and the Bulldog Fight Song. All students, parents, and patrons will remain in their vehicles during this entire event except when seniors have their names announced in front of the Bulldog Bowl sign. At that time, they will step out of their vehicle for a moment and wave to the crowd.
Seniors will participate in this parade in one of the following manners: 1) drive in a vehicle with you and your walking partner, 2) drive a vehicle by yourself, or 3) drive in a vehicle with your family. There will be no more than two graduates in a vehicle. Seniors will wear their cap and gown. We encourage you to decorate your vehicle with signs, balloons, shoe polish, etc. This will be a spectacular and memorable event! But wait . . . I hope to see you again in the summer!?!
Three tentative dates have been set during the summer to hold a traditional graduation ceremony in Bulldog Bowl if the prevailing health order at the time allows. The dates are June 20, July 17, and August 1. We are hoping and believing that we will be able to utilize one of these dates to allow you, the Graduating Class of 2020, to have your opportunity to walk across the stage in Bulldog Bowl to receive your diploma! Details will be outlined as time nears, including details on senior banquet and Baccalaureate. For now, pencil in these dates to hold your commencement exercises. If, for some reason, we are not able to come together to hold graduation during one of these dates, the parade will have served a dual purpose. If this is the case, plans will be made to handout diplomas.
One last event that needs to be communicated. Every Friday night for the next three weeks beginning at 8:00 we have invited all who would like to participate to come to the Bulldog Bowl parking lot for Be the Light. Pictures of Seniors will be displayed on the video board; we will also play the AHS Fight Song and Senior Class Song. We are asking all who participate in this event to remain in their vehicles at all times.
I hope this information answers questions as I know there have been many. You should be very proud of your Senior Class Officers; they represented you well! I do wish that we could do more, but I also believe that this is an outstanding plan that will honor our Graduating Class of 2020 while keeping us within the health order guidelines that we have been given.
Hang in there and finish Bulldog Strong!”
